Narratives of Visibility: What Will Our Legacy Be?
Mayville State University – Mayville, ND – Saturday, October 28, 2017
Current institutional policies are often not inclusive nor affirming of LGBTQ+ identities. However, many students, faculty, and administrators want their institutions to be affirming, and are frustrated by a lack of communication and resources provided for this movement.
In light of recent discussions of LGBTQ+ educational disparities in the United States, Mayville State University, North Dakota State University, and Darcy Corbitt Foundation will hold the second annual Great Plains Affirming Campus Conference (GPACC) on October 28, 2017, at Mayville State University.
The purpose of GPACC is to address issues related to campus inclusion of LGBTQ+ students by gathering LGBTQ+ individuals from our area for advocacy training and education, provide a safe space for networking, celebrating our LGBTQ+ diversity, provide Safe Zone training, cultural competency training, and networking for professionals (teachers, medical, etc.), and to educate the larger campus community on LGBTQ issues.
The theme of this year’s conference is Narratives of Visibility: What Will Our Legacy Be? This year’s GPACC will focus on bringing to the forefront regularly marginalized narratives relating to LGBTQA+ issues. Our goal with this theme is to illuminate LGBTQA+ issues regional campuses should be aware of in order to define the progressive steps we can work toward to create more affirming climates on our campuses. We are accepting abstracts for individual and panel presentations that forward discussions about LGBTQA+ issues in the educational, political, and community realms.
